Building on our collection of boards from our previous event held in San Diego (over half of which have now sold to collectors) we recently invited well over a dozen new artists to team up with shapers of their choice to create unique objects of art with the surfboard as the common substrate. With styles of art ranging from pure abstraction to gritty realism, from surreal visions to the honest captures of a camera’s lens, with narratives both visual and verbal, we are excited to present to you perhaps one of the most unique quivers of contemporary collectable surfboards ever assembled for a single cause. Many of the boards in this collection have significant values of their own, just by virtue of the hands that crafted them. The artists we’ve invited bring their lifelong skills honed in creating one-of-a-kind works of art to the boards, resulting in boards that just can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
This will be the only chance for Bay Area collectors to catch a glimpse of these incredible boards in person before they are taken to Southern California for an Auction Event that SurfAid International will be hosting later this year. All of the boards will be available for purchase at pre-auction prices with at least 50% of each sale going directly to SurfAid International to support SurfAid’s humanitarian efforts on the Mentawai and Nias islands in Indonesia. You don’t want to miss your chance to see these boards in person and meet many of the artists and shapers who will be in attendance, learn more about SurfAid International, and have a great time. We hope to see you there!

About The Board Art Benefit
The Board Art Benefit is a project designed to bring leading artists and shapers together to create original works of art utilizing surfboards for the purpose of raising support for SurfAid International.
The aim of the Board Art Benefit is to provide a great venue for the participating artists to showcase their work, to provide the public with a great chance to see collections of amazing hand-crafted board art in one place, and to support SurfAid International.
All of the boards are available to purchase at the prices shown, giving serious collectors all over the world the chance to own one of these boards, before the rarest and finest boards in the collection are selected for a Board Art Benefit Auction event to be held in the summer of 2012.
The first showing of finished boards was held at the Aaron Chang Ocean Art Gallery on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach on January 21st. The showing was a huge success and within days following the event six of the fifteen boards on display had sold at pre-auction prices to collectors all over the US.
The Board Art Benefit is an artist-driven project, and while we work closely with SurfAid International, we are not directly affiliated with them or any of the sponsors/partners listed on this site. We make stuff up as we go, and work hard to make this thing work for everyone involved. We are not a non-profit organization (if we were, we’d end up paying fees to file it legally and end up with overhead expenses, and administrative costs, and all that which would cost a bunch of dollars and basically detract from our purpose of raising dollars for non-profits like SurfAid International who actually do good things in the world). We are simply artists doing what we can with our limited resources to help folks in need, and have a good time doing it.

About The Community Quiver
The Board Art Benefit Community represents a worldwide community of artists collaborating with surfboard shapers to produce one of the most unique collections of contemporary surfboard art available.
Every board listed in the COMMUNITY QUIVER section of this site is available for purchase at the prices listed. We’ve made all of the boards available here to give collectors all over the world the chance to own one, before the rarest and finest boards in the collection are selected for a Board Art Benefit Auction event to be held in the summer of 2012.
While SurfAid International’s mission is to provide needed aid to the people living in the Mentawai Island communities, they also recognize the hard work of each artist and shaper involved in this project. The proceeds from each sale are divided between SurfAid International and the artists/shapers, making this project a benefit not just to the people of the Mentawai Islands, but also to the communities of artists and shapers all over the world that have joined in our efforts to make a difference.
As opportunities arise, many of these boards will be chosen based on a variety of criteria for display, sale, or auction at select live events and showings in various regions world-wide.
Stay posted for more details on upcoming events and shows here.

SurfAid International is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.
SurfAid was started by a group of concerned surfers in 2000 who were struck by the needless suffering and preventable death in the Mentawai Islands. SurfAid is now widely respected for its work in the Mentawai, Nias, Telo and Banyak islands, west of Sumatra, Indonesia.
SurfAid’s community-based health programs involve education in nutrition, hygiene, healthy environments and disease prevention – including mosquito net distribution. SurfAid has built an award-winning capacity in emergency preparedness and has delivered five emergency response programs following major disasters, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the October 2010 Mentawai tsunami.

Who Benefits?
From it’s inception the Board Art Benefit has been driven by the simple ethos of “Benefit Everyone”.
There are many events that aim to raise money for lots of great causes, but the underlying factor driving the Board Art Benefit is the idea that everyone involved should see a real and tangible benefit.
SurfAid International
We aim to benefit SurfAid International through raising funds for and awareness of their organization and the work they do. Many lives have been saved through the work of SurfAid International and we couldn’t be happier to help them continue their work.
The Artists
Professional artists often seem to be on “speed dial” for many non-profits engaging in fund-raising efforts. Many are stretched thin just trying to pay their own bills as working artists, and to be asked to donate their work to raise funds for a non-profit, no matter how wonderful they are, can be a soul-wrenching decision for an artist that wants to support the cause. The artist is painfully aware that often the art work is sold at far less than it’s full value, thus de-valuing the work of the artist as a whole. The non-profits effectively become discount clearing houses of artwork, competing directly with the artists for the very same buyers.
We recognized this tension and actively sought to make the Board Art Benefit an economically viable prospect for the artist as well as the organization, asking that the proceeds be split with the artists. The benefits of this decision were three-fold. For one, this made the event more attractive to the highest caliber professional artists we could find. Secondly, it created an environment encouraging the artists to put forth their very best work. And finally, with high caliber artwork from leading artists we maximize the fund-raising potential of the event.
Humans in Need
Organizations and artists are great and we are happy to support them, but ultimately we aim to benefit the people in need throughout the Mentawai and Telos Islands where SurfAid conducts the majority of it’s work.
What it comes down to? Kids living instead of dying… think about that. We did and here we are.
